After asking around again about the Thai visa I concluded it was to expensive and the relative risk of not getting the visa to high. So... I went and had a look at the ruins of Angkor.
To start, I think the ruins are amazing. What a gem in our modern world to have such a beautiful reminder of our heritage and what we can accomplish. And, the international community is doing a great job of restoring the crumbling ruins.
But, the price to visit is high. And it seems doubly high when you know it's a Vietnamese concession doing the billing. There are a lot of people... everywhere! It's near impossible to get a picture without any people in it (I don't like my pictures with crowds of people I don't know). Plus, don't expect to see the Indiana Jones style of ruins overgrown by the jungle. Most of the trees which had overrun the ruins have been removed by the restoration works (I concede some are still there in places).
Never the less, still wonderful.
